Copybook of the records of Yohogania County Court, 1776-1779.

The records in this collection are manuscript copies of the originals and detail court cases presented to the Yohogania County Court between 1776 and 1779. This copy appears to be contemporary to the time included in the records. The cases vary from property disputes to murder trials, and include a number of small references to the dispute over control of Yohogania County between Pennsylvania and Virginia. There are also references to property cases involving slaves and indentured servants, as well as to appointment of officers to the Continental militia. References are made to men serving in the Revolutionary War and allowances made to their families for support.

Yohogania County was established in Virginia in 1774, during the time when the sovereignty issue had not been resolved with Pennsylvania. In 1779 the controversy was settled in Pennsylvania's favor. Yohogania County included parts of these present day Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny, Westmoreland, Washington, Fayette and Beaver.
